URL shortening is about data tracking (assuming you don’t have ad redirects). There are also benefits that an end user doesnt know the link (affiliate cloaking for example). But tracking users is the big think.
How many people click on a link? What is the graph of link clicking - does it grow exponentially? What users create what types of URL links? Which users are more powerful (their links are more popular)
Think about a google analytics type of tracking… its analytics for the web.
How are URLs spread?
Emails, IM, and web pages.
What if yahoo or google integrated a short URL service into their email (like a button that just says, shorten URL)
Similarly, if Thunderbird, outlook, etc.. did the same.
These services.companies then could track this same data - Google and Yahoo might already be doing this … (tracking who clicks on what URL within the emails sent via their system)
Well, going back, if you want a short URL Script, you can write your own, or you can buy one. If your strength is programming, you may still want to consider buying one, and adding any features you need, and focusing on marketing.
